Speed Traps on the Parkways
1. For those using E LK Samm Pkwy, just outside Redmond, keep
an eye out for motocycle police positioned in the bushes, with radar gun in hand, on the east
side of the road. Southbound drivers, you will find them not far past
the Dry Cleaners. Northbound drivers, watch your speed as soon as you
lose sight of the lake.
2. Traveling either east or west on NE 40th, at the intersection of 172nd Ave NE,
be aware of a police car that sits on the northwest side of 172nd. His purpose
isn't the speed so much as it is the stop sign. Be sure you make a COMPLETE stop at this
intersection otherwise, no doubt, you will be issued a citation.
3. Headed north on W LK Samm Pwky, after the intersection
of NE 24th, be sure you are doing the speed limit. Just after rounding the bend where the road
straightens out, you will find a police car hiding in the entrance to Gleneden. The popularity
of this trap is partly due to the slope of the parkway as it makes a slight downward decent at
this point. Most people realize their speed too late, and before you know it you're doing
45 in a clearly marked 35 with flashing lights in your rear view mirror.
Southbound travelers aren't eliminated from this area either - making a
similar bend in the other direction, pay attention to your speed as you pass the bus stop...
if you're not careful, you'll see those same lights in your mirror.
4. Headed north on W LK Samm
Pkwy, just as you turn the bend at South Cove, a police car sits on
the side of the road nearest the lake. Rounding a similar bend traveling south, just after North
Cove, the same spot tends to be ideal for catching unsuspecting motorists. What makes this
stretch between NE 6th and NE 10th a good trap has everything to do with those bends in the
road in either direction - before you know it, you're zipping pass the patrol car hoping the officer is
taking a snooze.
5. Here's another one at the south end of the lake just
west of the state park. The closest street address is the 5200 block on W LK
Samm Pkwy SE - look for a sign there calling it "Dead Goose Cove". The police (sometimes a
cruiser, sometimes a motorcyle) lurk in a driveway shrouded by trees and bushes.
The speed limit in this stretch is 30 mph. Driving west, this trap
is not far past the state park entrance. Driving east, "Dead Goose
Cove" is right after 194th Ave SE. It's easy to get carried away here with your speed...
watching the cars next to you on I-90 zing by!
